Coverings Systems Range Arma-Chek
2
Covering Systems 2 Main target: provide UV protection and increase the insulation life expectancy reduce risk of CUI protect insulation against mechanical impact protect from salt water, extreme weather conditions
3
Arma Chek provide exceptionally high resistance against UV, oil, chemical and extreme weather. 3
4
Arma Chek helps to reduce the risk of CUI 4 Offshore applications Marine and ship building Petrochemical industries Energy plants & storage facilities
5
CUI = Corrosion under Insulation / The Challenge CUI is often difficult to identify because it is hidden beneath insulation and jacketing until it becomes a more serious problem… how does CUI occur? - insulation covering is breached - water ingress into the insulation - water and oxygen reach the metal surface 5
6
Corrosion – mechanism 6 wet corrosion presence of moisture (water, humidity) containing oxygen galvanic corrosion contact (also through wet insulation) of two metals with different electrode potentials; metal cladding can be affected by this type of corrosion Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) occurs in austenitic stainless steel if exposed simultaneously to the three trigger factors: - stresses within the metal - moisture - halogen ions (chloride, bromide, etc.) rust product: Fe(OH) 2 and Fe(OH) 3 Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is accelerated by: - availability of oxygen - high temperature - concentration of dissolved ions.
7
Additional consequences of CUI Insulation often requires replacement within several years at a cost of up to € 600 per linear meter. As well as CUI, water ingress can lead to weight gain and a significant reduction in both thermal and acoustic performance: 7
8
CUI – what cost? 8 The highest incidence of leaks in the refining and chemical industries are due to CUI and not process corrosion. Between 40% and 60% of piping maintenance costs are CUI related. The problems caused by CUI caused the oil & gas industry to consider moving away from mineral wool insulation.

CUI / Corrosion Under Insulation 9 Material with open cell structure Elastomeric material with closed cell structure External vapor barrier = concentrated diffusion resistance Ambient air Partial pressure of water vapor Closed cells = distributed diffusion resistance Fibrous and Open Cell Risk Risk of Fluid/Pressure Loss Wicking Galvanic Corrosion Water Spray / Moisture 100% protection from external vapour barrier and metal cladding Resistance to Water Vapour Diffusion No 1 risk to industry is CUI
10
CUI / Corrosion Under Insulation 10 Elastomeric, Closed-Cell Foam (FEF) minimise the risk of CUI Material with open cell structure Elastomeric material with closed cell structure Partial pressure of water vapor Closed cells = distributed diffusion resistance Water Spray / Moisture 100% protection from Nitrile Rubber External vapor barrier = concentrated diffusion resistance Resistance to Water Vapour Diffusion Ambient air
