Unit 1: Organization of the Body DLT’s: 13 – 17 8/19/2014 Chapter 4: Tissue

DLT 13: I can list the four major tissue types. Groups of cells similar in structure and function Groups of cells similar in structure and function The four types of tissues The four types of tissues –Epithelial –Connective –Muscle –Nerve

DLT 14: I can name the types of epithelium, describe the general characteristics and functions of epithelium, and identify an organ in which each is found. Epithelium is a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Epithelium is a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. –Covering and lining epithelium  Forms the outer layer of the skin, dips into and lines the open cavities of the cardiovascular, digestive, and respiratory systems, and covers the walls and organs of the closed ventral body cavity. –Glandular epithelium  Forms the glands of the body. Functions include: Functions include: –Protection –Absorption –Filtration –Excretion –Secretion –Sensory reception

DLT 14: I can name the types of epithelium, describe the general characteristics and functions of epithelium, and identify an organ in which each is found. Simple epithelia: Composed of a single layer of cells – found where absorption and filtration occur. Simple epithelia: Composed of a single layer of cells – found where absorption and filtration occur. Stratified epithelia: Composed of two or more layers – common in high- abrasion areas where protection is important. Stratified epithelia: Composed of two or more layers – common in high- abrasion areas where protection is important.

DLT 14: I can name the types of epithelium, describe the general characteristics and functions of each, and identify an organ in which each is found. Simple Epithelia: –Simple Squamous –Simple Cuboidal –Simple Columnar –Pseudostratified Columnar Stratified Epithelia: –Stratified Squamous –Stratified Cuboidal –Stratified Columnar –Trasitional

Stratified cuboidal Stratified cuboidal –Quite rare in the body –Found in some sweat and mammary glands –Typically two cell layers thick Stratified columnar Stratified columnar –Limited distribution in the body –Found in the pharynx, male urethra, and lining some glandular ducts –Also occurs at transition areas between two other types of epithelia

DLT 14: I can name the types of epithelium, describe the general characteristics and functions of each, and identify an organ in which each is found.

DLT 15: I can list the types of connective tissues, describe each type’s major functions, and describe common characteristics. Connective tissue is found everywhere in the body. Connective tissue is found everywhere in the body. Four main classes: Four main classes: –Connective tissue proper (broken down into loose areolar, adipose and reticular, and dense regular and irregular) –Cartilage (broken down into hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage –Bone tissue –Blood Major functions: Major functions: –Binding and support –Protection –Insulation –transportation

DLT 15: I can list the types of connective tissues, describe each type’s major functions, and describe common characteristics.

DLT 16: I can list the general characteristics of nervous tissue. The main component of the nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and nerves The main component of the nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and nerves –Regulates and controls body functions. Transmits electrical signals from sensory receptors to effectors Two major cell types: Two major cell types: –Branched neurons with long cellular processes and support cells

DLT 16: I can list the general characteristics of nervous tissue.

DLT 17: I can distinguish between the three types of muscle tissues, and describe the general characteristics of each. Highly cellular, well-vascularized tissues that are responsible for most types of body movement. Highly cellular, well-vascularized tissues that are responsible for most types of body movement. Possess myofilaments, elaborate versions of the actin and myosin filaments that bring about movement or contraction in all cell types. Three types: Three types: –Skeletal muscle –Cardiac muscle –Smooth muscle

DLT 17: I can distinguish between the three types of muscle tissues, and describe the general characteristics of each.
