HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Effect of Maintenance Measures on Service Life of Concrete facades Prof. Seppo Huovinen Helsinki University of Technology Laboratory of Structural Engineering and Building Physics The aims of the research are to: Develop a database, which include deterioration parameters of condition surveys. Analyze the ageing and deterioration processes of old concrete facades Determine and analyze the potential methods, with which the service life of the concrete facades can be increased before fatal defects occur. produce statistical calculation methods and formulae, with which the service life of the old facades can be estimated prior and after maintenance measures Developing a hygrothermal monitoring method for repaired facades Introduce rehabilitation measures of the concrete facades made in 1960's and 1970's.

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Background Engineering databases, have been developed in recent years. Repairing and maintenance databases: Bridge management system (BMS), Finnish road administration ScanPrint software by ADVITAM Inc. (France) for inspection and maintenance LifePlan: VTT Building and Transport for materials service life These visual inspections, field and laboratory tests requires to record, report, analyze and store large quantities of data (inspection records, drawings, photos, test results, etc) for years and it is easy to get lost. Moisture is the most important agent of building deterioration Moister is involved in: corrosion of concrete reinforcement, the damaging chemical processes such as carbonation and alkali- aggregate reaction freeze-thaw deterioration of concrete, stone, and masonry Hygrothermal monitoring modeling Developing a Condition Survey Database and Hygrothermal Monitoring Method for Concrete Facades

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY The objective of the Research: Effectively store and update this data, and allows more sophisticated search strategies, Enable data transfer to other software for further analysis, Produce detailed reports automatically for repaired building, Provide comprehensive and valuable information to decision- makers to get key-information for potential repair projects, Produce statistical calculation methods and formulae develop a hygrothermal monitoring and methods. give knowledge about the building physical functioning of buildings, and

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Linet network system Linet Network System, developed by “ Linet Oy (Ltd) ” Linet network consists of a twisted-pair cabling CAT5 system that transmits both the power and the data to and from the nodes, and a control unit (LIC04) for the network. Linet network can contain up to 200 nodes with a maximum length of 1000 meters. The topology of the network is totally free, either star, tree or point-to- point bus, providing for maximum flexibility in designing, installing and modifying the network.

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY LIC04 controller HMP44 Sensor Linet Nodes Twisted-pair cable RJ45 Light control

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY HMP44 Sensor SHT15 Sensor PT100

HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY The communication software The RHT software connects to LIC04 control unit via Ethernet cable in 15 minutes intervals The RHT communication software consists of four basic parts: System configuration to program nodes and sensors Telnet simulation to communicate with the LIC04 control unit Temperature and relative humidity calculations Data output to print the hygrothermal monitoring data to the screen and to an "ASCCI" file.
