1 Osmosis 3.A.10

2 End Drill 1. What structure is common to ALL cell types? Chloroplast
Plasma Membrane Cell Wall Mitochondria Flagella 2. The cell membrane is described as ____________ because it allows some substances to cross and restricts others. Permeable Impermeable Semi-permeable Isotonic End

3 Objective SWBAT (student will be able to) explain how water is transported through the cell by learning about osmosis. End

4 Agenda Lecture Activity Osmosis Osmosis Lab
Isotonic:When solute concentration in the environment is equal to that in the cell. Hypertonic:Solute concentration in the environment is higher than that in the cell. Hypotonic:Solute concentration in the environment is lower than in the cell Activity Osmosis Lab

5 Osmosis Movement of Water Across Cell Membrane “diffusion of water”
Water diffuses when it moves across cell membrane.

6 Vocabulary

7 Vocabulary Solute: Substance dissolved (sugar or salt)
Solvent: Liquid part (water) Solution: Solute and solvent (salt water)

8 Osmosis Diffusion across a membrane Involves the movement of water
Occurs when one molecule can not move across the membrane In order to reach equilibrium water has to move

9 Osmosis Osmosis diffusion of water from HIGH concentration of water to LOW concentration of water across a semi-permeable membrane

10 Water can move…sugar can’t

11 cluster of water molecules
Lower concentration of solute Higher concentration of solute Equal concentration of solute H2O Solute molecule Selectively permeable membrane Water molecule Solute molecule with cluster of water molecules Net flow of water

12 ??? What is a selectively permeable membrane?

13 ??? Cell Membrane Plasma Membrane
What is a selectively permeable membrane? The plasma membrane is said to be selectively permeable because it allows the passage of some solutes but not others.e.g.if sugar fits a channel through the plasma membrane. This makes this one of the important properties of the plasma membrane of all cells. Cell Membrane Plasma Membrane Phospholipid Bilayer:Fluid like a soap bubble resulting from pushing and pulling of phospholipids by water.

14 ??? Water moves from an area of _______ water concentration to an area of _____ water concentration

15 Keeping water balance Cell survival depends on balancing water uptake & water loss freshwater balanced saltwater

16 Hyper: a lot Hypo: a little Iso: unchanged Tonicity: pressure
Vocabulary Hyper: a lot Hypo: a little Iso: unchanged Tonicity: pressure

17 Water always moves to the “sugar/salt…”
Osmosis Water always moves to the “sugar/salt…” Water moves to balance the inside and outside of the cell

18 Solution Cell High amount of sugar in the solution
Hypertonic Solution Solution Cell Low amount of sugar in the cell

19 Solution Cell High amount of sugar in the solution
Hypertonic Solution Solution Cell Low amount of sugar in the cell

20 Water moves outside of the cell
Hypertonic Solution Example: raisins are dried grapes that were put in sugar solution. Water moves outside of the cell

21 Solution Cell Low amount of sugar in the solution
Hypotonic Solution Solution Cell High amount of sugar in the cell

22 Solution Cell Low amount of sugar in the solution
Hypotonic Solution Solution Cell High amount of sugar in the cell

23 Hypotonic Solution Water moves inside of the cell
