4 + Preparing for an on campus Review you itinerary multiple times and in detail Know the institutions mission, vision, and values Have a good understanding of the department in which you are interviewing in You interview starts as soon as you are picked up. Always have 3-4 questions for each interview throughout the day Typical Questions asked: Why this institution? How are you qualified for the position? What do you hope to gain professionally from this position? What is your management style? Describe your ideal supervisor What do you feel are the major problems facing college students today?

5 + Interview 101 Be Intentional don’t sacrifice your values to land the job Be Genuine you will never find the right fit if you are not yourself Don’t Underestimate your Graduate Assistantship You have directly advised students You have dealt with conflict You have developed benchmarks Ask the right questions What does a typical work day look like? How does the structure of the office work? Who do I report to? Do your homework What is the Greek population currently struggling with? How does the administration support Greek Life? Do they? Can I honestly see myself working for this institution?

6 + The “ Adjustment” You landed the job… Where am I going to live? How do I budget? How do I meet people? How will I manage my time? What is the transition between graduate student to professional staff look like? What do you do outside the office? How do I get involved with other professionals? Now What…

7 + Do not set unreasonable expectations Do not try to relive your own experience Students will fail- be ok with it Small steps towards bigger goals Set 1-3-5 goals Be comfortable with the uncomfortable Do not overstep your limits Get involved within Student Life Listen and observe before you make assumptions

8 + Teaching Fire A Lesson It is not your job to change what cant be changed … It is your job to let it burn or put it out…

9 + No consistent schedule Weeks you will work 24/7, weeks that you spend too much time watching reality TV Has to be a priority for the individual You do not need to PROVE yourself- you already got the job- prove you deserve it-

10 + Understanding policies Returning to a small fish in a big pond Lack of clarity/direction from supervisors Trust Relax- DO NOT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF The day ends at 5- be okay with it
