1 September 2014 LCCU Meeting We will demonstrate how to use System Restore to remove programs or drivers that may be causing problems, by reverting system files and programs to their state at an earlier time. We’ll answers members’ questions: –How compatible are Microsoft Word & Libre Office Writer or Excel & Libre Office Calc? –What are the basics of using Calc, the spreadsheet in the free Libre Office suite?Libre Office

2 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore Reasons to use System Restore –You cannot resolve an issue that occurs after installing new software or drivers. – You have accidentally downloaded & installed malicious software. –The system won’t boot and you want to restore the computer system’s state to a time when it did.

3 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore What System Restore restores: –Your documents, pictures and mail are not affected by system restore. –Files with extensions in the monitored file list are monitored by System Protection and are restored if they’ve been deleted after the restore point, and are deleted if they were added after the restore point. The list includes.exe,.dll,.bat,.com,.ini, and more than 500 others.the monitored file list

4 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore How to use System Restore –Determine the date & time that the issue began. –If the system boots, use normal means to uninstall or remove the program, driver or malware, then go to Start, right-click Computer, click Properties, System Protection, System Restore. –If it won’t boot, tap F8 key while booting to bring up Advanced Boot Options; select Repair Your Computer and System Restore. For HP, tap F11 key; in HP Recovery Manager, select System Restore.

5 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore How to run System Restore –Select a restore date just before problem occurred – click “Choose a different restore point” and “Show more restore points” for a list of what’s available. –Select the restore point and click “Scan for affected programs”. Before proceeding, uninstall programs that will be deleted to avoid partial uninstalls. –Click Next, Finish, etc. to perform restore. –After completion, there will be an option to undo the system restore (except when run in Safe Mode).

6 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore Controlling the System Restore settings: –go to Start, right-click Computer, click Properties, System Protection, Protection Settings. –Check that Protection is On for the C: drive; it may be on or off for other drives. –Select each drive & click Configure: the first option should be checked for C:, the second option is appropriate for drives that contain no software. –Except for Vista, you can adjust disk usage.

7 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore Cautions when running System Restore –Restoring to restore points followed by Security System Updates may produce unpredictable results. –If a user profile has been created after the restore point, or its password changed, this action is undone by the System Restore. –Avoid running System Restore from Safe Mode, if possible, as it cannot be undone. –Changes to files while in the System Recovery Environment are not monitored by System Protection

8 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Using System Restore System Restore to remove lock-screen viruses: –If you have ransomware that prevents booting into or using Windows, try accessing System Restore through the Advanced Boot Options menu, accessed by pressing F8 repeatedly while booting (F11 on HP systems). –If System Restore doesn’t work, run a virus scanner from a bootable disc or USB drive, off-line scanners available from Bitdefender, Avast, AVG, Avira, Norton & Sophos.run a virus scanner from a bootable disc or USB drive

Installed OK on club’s Vista PC. Win 7 PC had no messages when downloading & installing with ninite.com.

11 September 2014 LCCU Meeting Libre Office Compatibility with Microsoft Office: –Writer // Word DOCX good, but DOC even better; Calc // Excel XSL/X quite good; Impress // Powerpoint PPT/X: sometimes works. –Create a document in LibreOffice with doc format and try to open it in Office 2003/2007, the margin, tables and images might/will move a bit around. –A.doc file created in LibreOffice suffers from some changes when reopened in MS Office 2010. Your header and footer settings may be disturbed.
