A Growing Opportunity At Windsor High School

 Committed to the principle that ALL students deserve an opportunity to participate in rigorous and academically challenging courses and programs. All students who are willing to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum should be considered for admission to AP courses.  Schools will make every effort to ensure that their AP classes reflect the diversity of their student population.  The Board encourages the elimination of barriers that restrict access for AP courses to students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the AP Program.

 Prepare students for college  Windsor AP classes are equivalent to a one semester college course  Prepare students to take the AP exam to receive credit for a specified course

 Congratulations!!!  You have challenged yourself by choosing to take AP at Windsor High School – a year-long, college level course.  While you have the opportunity to earn an honors credit at Windsor, you also have the opportunity to receive college credit after taking the AP Exam.

 The rich course material, classroom discussions and demanding assignments typical of AP courses will help your child develop the content mastery and critical thinking skills expected of college students.  How you can support your child this year:  ƒ. Designate specific areas for homework and studying  ƒ. Remind your child to prioritize classes, activities and work commitments  ƒ. Recommend that your child form a study group  As the parent or guardian of an AP student, you can take pride in the fact that your child is participating in a challenging academic program.

 Research shows how taking AP can help reduce the cost of college.  AP students are more likely to complete their bachelor’s degrees on time. Most students at public colleges and universities take five or six  ƒAP has also emerged as an important factor in college scholarship decisions.  Taking AP increases eligibility for scholarships and makesstudents more attractive to colleges.  To see the numbers and learn more, visit: www.collegeboard.com/apandthecostofcollege.

 Confidence — AP helps you develop better study habits,  improve your writing skills and sharpen your problem-solving abilities — giving you the confidence to tackle the academic challenges that you can expect in college.  Credit — Entering college with AP credits gives you time  to move into upper-level courses in your field of interest, pursue a double major, or study or travel abroad.  College Success — Research consistently shows that  students who are successful in AP typically experience greater academic success in college than similar students who do not participate in AP.

 Each May, AP exams are administered at high schools throughout the country in more than 30 different subjects from art history to physics. Your child will take the AP exam at Windsor during school hours.  But that's not all. Because high scores demonstrate mastery of college-level material, admissions officers often attach a lot of weight to AP coursework and exams. AP work could just give you the added edge over students with similar GPAs and admission test scores. AP Courses are weighted as if they were an Honors Class at Windsor.

 For the AP Exam – Students can receive a score ranging from a 5-1.  5: Extremely well qualified 4: Well qualified 3: Qualified 2: Possibly qualified 1: No recommendation  In practice, most colleges require at least a 3 and many of the more selective universities demand a 4 or 5 before granting credit. (i.e. Missouri-Rolla S&T requires a 4 on the AP Gov’t Exam as opposed to UMSL requires a 3).

 The fee for each exam is $87  The amount you pay, however, may vary:  ƒThe College Board provides a $22 fee reduction* per exam for students with acute financial need. In addition, your school may forgo its $8 rebate for each fee-reduced exam, making the final cost to you $57 per exam. Most states provide federal and/or state funds to supplement the College Board fee reduction. Check with your AP Coordinator to learn more about fee reductions and state and district subsidies.

 In July, AP grades are sent to you, your high school, and the college you designated when you signed up for the test.  These transcripts contain the scores from all the AP exams you have ever taken—this year's results and the results of exams you may have taken in previous years.  If you are a junior and are certain you did not do well, you might want to cancel the scores and take the test again during your senior year. If you do not cancel the score, you can still take the exam again, but both scores will show up on your transcript

 - Example Below Is For The AP Gov’t Class  60 Multiple Choice Questions (45 min)  50% of exam  4 FRQs – Free Response Questions (100 minutes)  12.5% for each FRQ for a total of 50% Time Allowed: 2 hr. and 25 min.

 Globally, out of 223,771, nearly half of the test taking students did receive AP credit.

 Imitate AP exam in development  Imitate AP exam in assessment  Coursework is equivalent to college-level work  Curriculum, textbooks, and related materials are set by the standards that are governed by the College Board
