Everyday Use of Fractions and Decimals
How do we use fractions and decimals in our everyday life? Everyday Use of Fractions and Decimals All our numbers are called decimal numbers because decimal means 10, and our number system is based on tens. What do you think I mean when I say that our number system is based on tens? Numbers (or parts of numbers) less than 1 can also be written in this system. You’re very use to writing numbers that are less than 1, such as ½ or ¾ by using fractions. You probably know that you can also write numbers less than 1 by using a decimal point in our base-ten system. These numbers are like fractions: they identify quantities that are between whole numbers. I know that you have seen these numbers in various places. Does anyone know how to say or write any of these numbers? What do you know about the values of these numbers? What fraction are they equal to? Are they more than or less than 1? 0.5, 1.5, 0.25

Everyday Use of Fractions and Decimals Can anyone give us an example of a fraction or decimal that you see or hear at home, at the store or somewhere else? Examples: Where might you see 0.5 as a decimal? If you are sick and someone takes your temperature, what would your normal body temperature be? Everyday Use of Fractions Everyday Use of Decimals ½ of a Sandwich A quarter of an hour ¾ inch 1 ½ lbs of sliced Cheese $9.75 1.5 pounds .346 batting average gallons of gas on the gas pump 10.5 miles on the car’s odometer

Everyday Use of Fractions and Decimals Can you say 1.5 pounds a different way? What mixed number is equivalent to 1.5? How much is gallons of gas? What amounts of gas is it between? Is 9.75 a decimal? Reviewing Decimals Let’s use this blank square to represent one WHOLE. For example, one WHOLE candy bar. This grid below shows the same WHOLE divided into EQUAL parts. Let’s say I shade in ONE part. What part have I shaded in? How would you write this amount? The place to the right of the decimal point is for TENTHS. If there is a 1 in that place, it means ONE TENTH. I can write it with a zero in the ones place to show that there are NO WHOLE numbers, or I can just with the decimal point followed by a . Both of these are ways to write one tenth. 0.1 .1

Reviewing Decimals What if I shaded in FIVE of these parts on the first grid? How much of the whole square would that be? It’s on half, but how else could you name it? How would you write five tenths? How many parts is this grid divided into? What would you call one part of this grid if the whole square is one whole? How would you write that as a fraction? Does anyone know how to write it as a decimal? How many of these hundredths equal one tenth?
