1 What is Life? – Scavenger Hunt Abiotic and Biotic Factors
Amanda Dawson BSC 307 Authentic Assessment

2 Description After an introduction to the topic of ecology, the students will participate in a scavenger hunt where they will collect specimens in nature. They will sort and classify the specimens into living and nonliving, and based on these classifications they will create a dichotomous key.

3 Objectives TSWBAT… Distinguish between living and nonliving organisms by considering traits that define life. Organize and categorize collected specimens based on observable traits. Develop and use a dichotomous key from the collected specimens.

4 Materials and Preparation
Dissecting microscope or magnifying lenses Forceps Collection jar, plastic bags, bucket Trowel Cameras for pictures of specimens that cannot be collected

5 What Was Collected pine tree, rock, robin, tin can, deer, mouse,
dandelion, clam, oak tree, paramecium, bicycle, ant
