1 Aboriginals

2 Aboriginal schools Kids ages 7-15 were required to go to school Children were not allowed to speak their first language Children were separated from their sibling For many this meant hundreds even thousands of miles Parliament changed the Indian act Scott believed that education was key If they were caught speaking their own language they were beat and sometimes there were sexual abuses.

3 Assimilation The goal of the indian act was to assimilate first nations people into the broader candaien society. Over the years parliament changed the act several times without consulting first nation people. Many of the reserves were too small for first nations to carry on traditional activities. In addition budget cuts in the federal department of Indian affairs reduced services. And government officials decided that the annual benefits promised in treaties discouraged first nations people from findings jobs. So these payment were reduced and made only grudgingly.

4 Indian Act People in the late 1800s tried to live in the west area of the usa, but that just started violence in the area. The Canadian government wanted them to come up to western Canada, but they didn’t want any of the previous violence. The Canadian government encouraged western first nations like Cree to sign treaties that were all right, but they gave a lot of their land away. They were granted reserves.. In 1876, parliament passed the Indian act which gave the government almost complete control over them and anyone on the res. They got benefits. It included government funded health care and education. They lost their right to vote. They had to get permission to leave the reserve so then they couldn’t drink any alcohol.
