Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie NATIONAL JOINT MASTER PROGRAMME in NANOSCIENCE AND NANOTECHNOLOGY Laura Tugulea Professor of Biophysics Faculty of Physics-University of Bucharest
3
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 WHY NATIONAL? To exploit the synergy of resources of best equipped didactic and research laboratories and high qualified personnel To implement the reform of higher education in Romania in accordance with the Bologna-Prague-Berlin process To implement and exploit the future laws on higher education in Romania: Law of university studies organization Law of university consortia
4
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 WHY JOINT? In modern education and research multiple complementary competencies are needed, from different scientific disciplines and/or different technological sectors, in order to work across traditional boundaries. Inter-disciplinarity will be facilitated. Institutional and other barriers to co-operation at the interface between disciplines and sectors will be over-passed.
5
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 The National Joint Master programme will be jointly developed by cooperation between 4-6 Romanian universities and 6-8 Research & Development institutes from Bucharest, Iassi, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara BASIC ELEMENTS The universities and research institutes will cooperate for: planning the programme of studies Curriculum design and development the accomplishment of all activities
6
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 The Master programme will be based on modules: intensive teaching periods: theoretical and laboratory courses, seminars - mainly in universities practical stages (of minimum 3 months) in specialized laboratories from universities and research institutes. BASIC ELEMENTS
7
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 National enterprises and international industry companies will be identified and invited to participate to the Master programme with: specialists (lectures or tutorial activities) hosting laboratories for students practice BASIC ELEMENTS The respective companies with preference will select the Master graduates.
8
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The Ministry of Education and Research will be responsible, at national level, for the programme (Curriculum approval, funding) by involving the directions Education and Research. University of Bucharest will coordinate the National Joint Master programme.
9
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The length of studies: 2 years. Number of ECTS credits: 120. The graduation implies the defend of a Dissertation thesis in front of a commission of professors from all universities and research institutes. The Master Diploma will be recognised by all universities.
10
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The admission to the Master programme: after passing a national examination The candidates should be graduates, at least of the first university cycle: - in basic science (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics-informatics) - in engineering sciences Master of Excellence
11
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The number of students/year will be around 20 All students will obtain governmental scholarships or grants from the places of practical stage.
12
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The financing of the programme: mainly governmental, but also extra - budgetary resources will be involved: - from enterprises /companies, - regional development programmes, - research and cooperation programmes.
13
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 BASIC ELEMENTS The Master programme will be continuously developed and modernised by participation of Romanian universities and R&D instiitutes in European programmes: Socrates-Erasmus (Curriculum development and Intensive Programmes) and FP6 (NoE, Marie Curie etc).
14
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 DESIGNING CURRICULUM Using TUNING METHODOLOGY : based on learning outcomes and competences Using general tendencies in higher education: Shift of paradigm: moving from a staff oriented approach to a student centred approach More flexibility in first and second cycle programmes What should a student know, understand and be able to do to be employable?
15
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 DESIGNING CURRICULUM Two key points: I. Inter-disciplinarity, since nanoscience and nanotechnology demands a combination of various skills in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering II. The role of laboratory courses and practical works of fundamental importance for basic science and applications.
16
Simpozionul Lansarea initiativei romanesti in nanostiinta si nanotehnologie Bucharest, 14 April 2004 FUTURE DEVELOPMENT Joint Masters with other universities from Romania and EU countries as response to the RO and EU job market demand By participation in the framework of Socrates programme: ERASMUS MUNDUS By participation in the framework of FP6: NoE, Marie-Curie Actions
