STATUS UPDATE EM SUBCOMMITTEE Friedrich Roth, EM subcommittee chairman SEG 2012, Las Vegas Technical Standards Committee meeting

STATUS UPDATE EM SUBCOMMITTEE Main action since TSC meeting at SEG 2011 in San Antonio: HDF5 license agreement signed by SEG Executive Committee and The HDF Group –Gives the SEG Technical Standards Committee the possibility to consider HDF5 in its standardization work. –Warrants the long-term accessibility of geophysical data stored in HDF5. –Reinforces the general copyright notice and license terms for HDF5 and removes any ambiguities relating to these terms.

AGREED LICENSE TERMS 1.The HDF Group provides the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and organizations and individuals using, developing, and maintaining SEG technical standards a time-unlimited, non-exclusive, and non-transferrable license to use HDF5 at no cost. 2.The license applies to the HDF5 software library and utilities, data model, data format, and documentation. 3.The license to the HDF5 software library and utilities is regulated by the existing copyright notice and license terms. (see Appendix A) 4.Software implemented using the HDF5 software library and utilities does not inherit any license terms or copyright from HDF5, with the following exception: Szip. (see Appendix B) 5.The license holds for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. 6.The license does not give The HDF Group any right, title, or interest in the data and information stored using SEG technical standards based on HDF5.

LICENSE TERMS 7.The license is valid globally. SEG shall comply with all U.S. export control laws and regulations. 8.The license may not be revoked or changed without mutual consent under any circumstances, e.g., transfer of the HDF5 copyright and ownership to a third party, change of corporate form, etc., in order to warrant the long-term accessibility of data stored using SEG technical standards based on HDF5. 9.The SEG Technical Standards Committee will acknowledge The HDF Group and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in any SEG technical standard publication and documentation featuring HDF5 technologies. 10.SEG gives The HDF Group permission to publicize SEG’s use of HDF5 in SEG technical standards work, and the HDF Group gives SEG permission to publicize SEG’s use of HDF5 in SEG technical standards work.

In no event shall The HDF Group or the Contributors be liable for any damages suffered by the users arising out of the use of this software, even if advised of the possibility of such damage.

WHAT IS HDF5? HDF5 is more than “just” a format: Intuitive high-level data model. Groups AttributesDimensions Datasets File Low level storage format How the user thinks of the data. How the data is stored on disk. Not relevant to the user! Efficient software libraries for reading/writing data in HDF5 C, C++, Fortran, Java, Python, Matlab How the user accesses the data. Defining the SEG standard Using the SEG standard Developed and maintained by The HDF Group: www.hdfgroup.orgwww.hdfgroup.org

BENEFITS OF HDF5 Self-describing Easy and fast access to all relevant data Cross-platform portability Flexible and extensible Free  Very well suited as data exchange and processing format for marine EM data -Few and small industry/academic groups (compared to seismic industry) -Fast technology change -Encourage CSEM processing software development -Encourage technology adoption and further development of marine EM May also turn out useful for other geophysical data.
