1. Chapter 13

2.  Spring came and the monster was coexisting with the cottagers.  Felix, the son, seemed sadder than before  There was a knock and a dark, beautiful woman came to the cottage.

3.  Safie, the Arabian woman, spoke no French, but was as in love with Felix, and he was in love with her.  The family welcomed her and taught her to speak French.  The monster learned along with her.

4.  He became able to understand their conversations and the nightly readings of history so that he grew more educated concerning humanity and the world.  In learning about humanity, he noted his separation from them.  "'When I looked around I saw and heard of none like me. Was I, then, a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled and whom all men disowned?'“(102)

5.  The more he learned, the worse he felt.  “For a long time I could not conceive how one man could go forth to murder his fellow, or even why there were laws and governments; but when I heard details of vice and bloodshed, my wonder ceased, and I turned away with disgust and loathing.” (101)  He had no idea where he came from or how he came into existence.  These unanswered questions made the monster increasingly more lonely.
