Jesus’ Farewell Discourse Jesus’ Departure; Spirit’s Arrival High Priestly Prayer Foot Washing 13:1 13:38 14:1 16:33 17:1 17:26

8 Jesus’ Farewell Discourse
Gospel of John John 13 Introduction Revelatory act - No mention of the Last Supper. Does the Foot Washing teach us something that could be subtly missed in the sacrament of Communion? Does it provide us with the attitude of Communion rather than a formal ritual? Intentional act – It was not done upon arrival as one might expect. This was not just an act of common courtesy. Christological act - It demonstrates a new depiction of Divinity. Trinitarian? Jesus’ Farewell Discourse Jesus’ Departure; Spirit’s Arrival High Priestly Prayer Foot Washing 13:1 13:38 14:1 16:33 17:1 17:26

9 Jesus’ Farewell Discourse
Gospel of John John 13 - Washing Feet as a Lesson in Divine Love Two interpretations of Foot Washing, both Christological in orientation: Salvation event – a cleansing , which disciples will only understand after His death (13:7) Washed all 12 disciples feet (including Peter and Judas). “Love for enemy” Model for Community Behavior – He commanded them to “wash one another’s feet.” What was not beneath His dignity was certainly not below theirs. Jesus’ Farewell Discourse Jesus’ Departure; Spirit’s Arrival High Priestly Prayer Foot Washing 13:1 13:38 14:1 16:33 17:1 17:26

10 Jesus’ Farewell Discourse
Gospel of John “He is Going Back to the Father” Discourse Implications – Good News that Jesus is not here “Let not your hearts be troubled” (12:27; 13:21;14:1, 27) Altered Relationship Betrothal language not Building language New Commandment, “Love one another” Altered Reality •Changes heaven; Incarnation Continues •Changes earth; Spirit Empowers In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 13:34- New Commandment 15:9-12 – Love one another, lay down your life, not servants but friends Jesus’ Farewell Discourse 14:12 Greater works than these you will do…because I go to the Father Jesus’ Departure; Spirit’s Arrival High Priestly Prayer Foot Washing 13:1 13:38 14:1 16:33 17:1 17:26

11 Jesus’ Farewell Discourse
John 17 Prayer of Empowerment-Unity Jesus’ closing words to the Disciples; and they overhear them as He prays. Insight into the mind of Christ (God-head). Bridge back to Chap 13. Jesus’ Prayer Prays for Himself (17:1-5) Prays for Disciples (17:6-19) Prays for all who will believe through their (disciples’) message (17:20-26) Each of three prayers offered by Jesus focuses on Father’s Will/Purpose. A call to “Oneness” (often in the face of opposition). Gospel of John Jesus’ Farewell Discourse Jesus’ Departure; Spirit’s Arrival High Priestly Prayer Foot Washing 13:1 13:38 14:1 16:33 17:1 17:26
