7  Athena was one of Zeus’ daughters  She is the goddess of wisdom  The myth says that she was born as a lady from Zeus’ brain and she was born wearing full armour  She was also the goddess of farmers, sailors and war  She chose to live in Athens and she was later given the city of Athens as an award for a competition

8  The competition was this: the King of Athens asked the gods to give a useful thing to humans. Poseidon (Zeus’ brother and Athena’s uncle) gave humans a sea water fountain. Athena gave humans the olive tree. The King chose Athena’s olive tree  She invented the plow, rake, chariot and the flute  She was excellent at spinning and embroidery and she used to teach the women of Athens how to spin and embroider like her  Once, there was a woman named Arachne who boasted that her skills were better than those of the goddess. Athena got so angry that she turned Arachne into a spider. This is the myth of why the spider always weaves a web.  Athena loved animals and you can find a lot of pictures of Athena with an owl, her favourite animal.  In Athens, there is a big temple called the Parthenon built for Athena. In the past it had a huge statue of Athena in it but this was then destroyed. There is a replica of it in America

The hat and the sandals had wings

14  He was the god of athletes and they used to say that he invented boxing and racing  When people died, the Greeks thought that it was Hermes who guided their souls to the Underworld.  He was chosen as messenger of the gods not only for his speed but also because of his ability as a good talker, and so would be able to deliver messages well.
