1 How to Use Quotes in Your Writing To enhance what you are trying to say…

2 Introduce your quotations…  A quotation should never suddenly appear out of nowhere  Some kind of information about the quotation is needed. Name the author, give his or her credentials, name the source etc.  For example: In an article in Newsweek, John Smith writes that dogs vary in the degree of shyness they exhibit: "The chow breed seems to be especially...."

3 Discuss your quotations…  State the quote and then put something like…  This idea/feeling tells the reader that  From this the reader can understand/see that…

4 Begin the quotation in the middle of your sentence…  Embed the quote  For example: I live in the country where life is slow and quaint. Your sentence: Mary believes that "life is slow and quaint" in the country.

5 Citations  You always need to cite where quotes come from with parenthetical documentation  For testing purposes, however, the scorers will assume that you have gotten the material from the selection you have just read

6 Punctuation  Make sure all marks of punctuation come inside the quotation marks
