2 Latin and the Roman Languages
All Romance languages descend from Vulgar Latin (common speech), the language of soldiers, settlers and merchants of the Roman Empire, which was significantly different from the Classical Latin of Roman literati (intellectuals). Proportion of the 690 million native Romance language speakers contained by each language.
