Curriculum Enhancement Project Academic Year consultation 2 Staff meetings October 2012

Agenda Re-cap of previous consultation Feedback summary from current consultation Clarifying ‘incorrect’ assumptions Next steps Q&A with group members

Previous consultation Key themes from feedback, staff meetings & focus groups Good idea to have contiguous block in semester 2 Some concerns over Easter and child-care Complete loss of semester 1 exam period was problematic for some modules and programmes Students keen on a ‘proper break’ between 2 semesters Costs of change

Revised proposal

Key themes from current consultation feedback General support for concept of 2 contiguous semesters ‘Fixing’ the Easter break well received BUT needs to align to the Leeds LEA break May allow students to choose S2 modules on basis of S1 performance Concerns about impacts on field trips Some concerns over need for feedback weeks

Key themes from consultation feedback Concerns about possible pressure on students from more compressed S1 exam schedule Impact on attendance in later weeks? Impact on teaching time if Easter falls in semester Use of Easter break for report writing Impact on research sabbaticals and conferences Extension Studies block – value if not compulsory? Recruitment of international students with earlier September start

Scotland model

Incorrect assumptions New structure already decided and feedback would not affect the outcomes There would be no resource available to enable the changes to happen; just greater workload for staff There would be University-wide rules and restrictive expectations in terms of course design, e.g. all modules would have to be 20+ credits running over both semesters no flexibility in the model

Next steps Consultation with staff and students w/c 1 October Review of feedback to date by Project Board 10 October Consultation update to TSEB 21 November Decision by Project Board to progress/not progress – Dec 2012 Slides available on website www.curriculum.leeds.ac.uk
