3 Anthropology takes a holistic approach  Examines environment, family, language, dress, etc.  Goal: to find typical characteristics of human populations  Etic approach: culturally neutral  Emic approach: culturally biased

4 Fields of Anthropology #1 Biological/Physical  Studies the emergence and evolution of humans  Explores how and why humans vary biologically

5 Field #2: Archaeology  Reconstructs history for societies lacking a written record  Deals mostly with pre-history
