By Isabelle Schneider

Biological Pest Control  A method of controlling the population of an undesirable species  Can depend on natural mechanisms or artificial methods  Uses minimal or no chemical treatments  Examples: weeds, insects, etc.

Ladybug- controls population of pest

Introducing a Predator  Can regulate the population of the pest  Creates a new species in the area  Flaws- may not have predators- overpopulates  Example: Spiders feed on many insects- keeps population controlled

Pheromones  An excreted chemical that triggers a social response in a species  Control male sexual behaviors  Disrupts mating process of different species  Can stop reproduction of a species  Limits population

Sterilization  Releases an overwhelming amount of sterile insects  Can’t produce offspring if mated with  Decreases the next generation’s population  Repeated release of insects can wipe out an entire population

Screwworm- 1 st pest removed using sterilization insect technique
