Biological Pest Control A method of controlling the population of an undesirable species Can depend on natural mechanisms or artificial methods Uses minimal or no chemical treatments Examples: weeds, insects, etc.
3
Ladybug- controls population of pest
4
Introducing a Predator Can regulate the population of the pest Creates a new species in the area Flaws- may not have predators- overpopulates Example: Spiders feed on many insects- keeps population controlled
6
Pheromones An excreted chemical that triggers a social response in a species Control male sexual behaviors Disrupts mating process of different species Can stop reproduction of a species Limits population
7
Sterilization Releases an overwhelming amount of sterile insects Can’t produce offspring if mated with Decreases the next generation’s population Repeated release of insects can wipe out an entire population
8
Screwworm- 1 st pest removed using sterilization insect technique
