28 New Practical English 3 Sentence Writing Changes in People’s Diets in one city of China As can be seen from the table, great changes took place in people’s diets over the period from 1998 to 2002. The consumption of grain decreased by 4%, while the consumption of quality food, such as milk and meat, increased steadily. There were chiefly two reasons, I think, for the change. In the past, many people could not afford meat and milk whose prices were only within reach of well-to-do families. But with the increase of their income, most people began to receive enough money to buy them. They wanted to eat better, more healthy food. They were seeking the most reasonable diet structure which would benefit their health. In short, with the improvement of people’s living standard, changes in their diet would be more obvious and great.

37 New Practical English 3 Deguang Inc. Net Income 1991-2000 The company’s net income increased considerably during the 1990s. However, during the early 90s, growth was very slow. This was because most of the agency’s clients were Chinese companies, and the Chinese economy grew a bit slowly during the first half of the decade. The net income actually fell by ¥4m from ¥25m to ¥21m in 1992, and there was only a slight rise during the period 1993-95. As the Chinese economy grew faster during the late 90s, the company’s income increased significantly. The soar started in 1996, when the net income reached ¥30m. It rose by ¥8m in 1997 and further by ¥24m in 1998. Then in 1999, there was a very sharp increase, and the income reached a record level of ¥102m. In fact, the income peaked in 1999, with a slight fall in 2000 to ¥96m.
