1 Laboratory of Vector-borne Virus Diseases

2 Regulatory responsibilities of LVVD personnel Vaccines to prevent illnesses caused by vector-borne viruses: –Flaviviruses: yellow fever, dengue, JE, TBE, West Nile, etc. –Alphaviruses: VEE, EEE, WEE, etc. –Bunya-, Arena-, Filoviruses Rabies virus vaccines: –In vitro potency assay under development Hepatitis A vaccines: All clinical review (L Markoff) CBER committees Consultation with OTRR (B Falgout) Inspections (R Levis) Team Biologics (R Levis, L Markoff)

3 Research in LVVD Creation of full-length infectious DNAs for positive-strand RNA viruses, esp. Flaviviruses. –to enhance safety of live, attenuated candidate vaccines (dengue, JE) –to elucidate interactions of viral proteins required for replication –to identify new mutations with an attenuating phenotype (dengue, West Nile) Mechanism for dengue-induced apoptosis of infected cells. Complementation of defective flavivirus gene function in trans.
