1 A Day in the Life of a SENCo … at Selwyn School.

2 Our Key Considerations! 1.The Education Act (1989) requires all Boards of Trustees to enrol students in their school, irrespective of students needs and abilities. 2.NAG 1 requires all boards to identify students with special education needs (including gifted and talented) and develop teaching strategies, goals and procedures to meet their needs. 3.The government wants all schools to be fully inclusive. 4.We need to recognise that special education needs vary from child to child.

3 In particular … 1.It is critical to ensure that students with special education needs are enjoying school and participating and achieving alongside their peers.

4 My Employment. 1.I work for 3.5 days (17.5 hours) per week. 2.10 hours is spent teaching students on our Ngati Whakaue Literacy Programme. 3.2.5 hours is spent on PB4L. 4.5 hours is spent on my SENCo role.

5 My SENCo Role. 1.I maintain and regularly update our Special Education Needs Register (paper document) and also on E-Tap. 2.Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS). I … Meet with parents and maintain an ongoing relationship Organise transition visits Recommend the appropriate teacher, specialist teacher and teacher aide Facilitate and attend IEP meetings Liaise with MOE: Special Education

6 My SENCo Role. Referrals: I complete referrals to the following groups. 1.MOE: Special Education 2.RTLB 3.RT Lit 4.iCAMHS 5.Riding for the Disabled 6.MIGS gym 7.Stand 8.Children’s Team 9.CYFs 10.ESOL

7 My SENCo Role. In School Liaison. I liaise with … 1.The school leadership team 2.Our community/attendance officer 3.Our Social Worker in Schools 4.Teachers, specialist teachers and teacher aides 5.Our in-school Speech Language Therapist 6.PARENTS, CAREGIVERS and wider FAMILY!

8 My SENCo Role. Out of School Liaison. I liaise with … 1.MOE: Special Education 2.Children’s Team 3.RTLBs, RT Lits, RT Deaf 4.Paediatricians 5.ICAMHs 6.Public Health nurse, Mobile Ear Caravan nurse 7.Stand 8.RDA 9.ACC 10.Other Schools

10 Why do I love my Job? 1.I enjoy my job because I am able to support a significant number of children in their learning and social development. 2.I love nagging at people to get stuff that I think our students are entitled to! 3.I enjoy getting up people’s noses! 4.I like the organisational elements that are required to do this job. 5.I like the detective nature of some of the work. 6.I like seeing children feeling happy and successful.
