Lessons 3 and 5
2
Tasks for this lesson Ask questions and make sure you fully understand how to complete the tasks Don’t leave until you are certain that you are able to work independently on the given tasks!
3
Adding chords to a melody Check to see what key you are in Write out the scale Add triads to each of the scale notes Put a cross through chord iii and chord vii If you need to, write the notes names below the written notes
4
Calculate your options… Look at the first note of the melody Find out what triads contain that note Choose the triad you thing will fit best Chord I, IV & V are major chords Chords ii & vi are minor chords
5
Always start with chord I Use chord V if possible around the half way point (imperfect cadence) Use chord I, preceded by chord V or IV at the end (if you are working on a complete melody of course!) Try to avoid using chord I and chord ii consecutively
6
Four-Part Harmony We are now going to complete some four-part harmony exercises This will follow the same process as before, but now you need to double one of the notes Always double the root note of the chord, or the 5 th of the chord. Do not double the third
7
The rules so far… Choose a triad in which the melody note appears Start with chord I, end on chord I Try to have an imperfect cadence near the middle and a plagal (IV-I) or perfect (V-I) cadence at the end Double either the 1 st or 5 th note of the triad to complete the chord The melody must always be the highest part and the notes from the chord must go below the melody Write two notes on each line of music Avoid using chord ii after chord I if possible Keep all of the chords in root position at the moment Do not use chord iii or chord vii
8
