15 Equity Policy Attendance zone changes School closings Closed: Forest Park Elementary (June 2008)…295 students Oakland Intermediate (June 2009)…196 students Raleigh Court Elementary (June 2009)…374 students William Ruffner Middle (June 2009)…393 students Huff Lane Intermediate (June 2010)...190 students In 2008, to ensure that equitable educational opportunities were available to all students, the Roanoke City Public Schools School Board analyzed and adjusted elementary school and middle school attendance zones. As a result, several school closings and repurposing of buildings were approved. Two elementary school buildings were repurposed, one became a site for alternative education, and the other an academy for overage/under- credited students. Thus far, the academy has had 853 graduates. Two additional elementary schools and one middle school were closed. The Equity Policy was initially approved by the Board in June 2009. 7
