1 CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 AREVA T&D Automation Protection & Control of Series Compensated Networks Z Q Bo PART 3 Non Distance Protection PART 4 Dynamic Tests

2 CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Non Distance Protection PART 3 Current differential & Directional Comparison relays are little affected by series compensation Potential a problem for Current Differential relay for long UHV lines where charging current is too high Directional Comparison might be a better choice in such case Cross Differential protection relay for double circuit lines is not effected by series compensation and does not require communication link

3 CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Comparison of electric quantities between the double lines Similar  no fault, or external fault Difference  internal fault Cross Differential Relay Combination of two types of cross differential relay elements: Current-balanced relay (CBR) Directional transverse differential relay (DTR)

4 CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Performance of Cross differential relay Tests conducted at China EPRI show » The relay is able to offer fast response for all fault types within the instant protected zone, which is about 90% of the total line length. » The relay is able to successively trip for all types of remote in zone fault outside the instant protected zone after remote CB operates. » The relay is able to clear high resistance fault for EHV long lines both instantly and successively. » The relay is able to trip the faulted phase only for evolving faults on both of the two lines.
