19 B2B versus B2C  Business to business. Influenced by actions and needs of a select group of business “partners” who are knowledgeable of category issues and focused daily on “business outcomes.” They are rarely influenced by outside interests, other than government regulation.  Business to consumer. Influenced by actions and needs of thousands of individuals who have little knowledge of the industry and little interest in becoming experts. They are heavily influenced by third parties and judge success by their individual outcome.

20 One Size Doesn’t Fit All  In 2004, the United States spent $1.9 trillion, or 16 percent of GDP, on health care. This averages out to about $6,280 for each man, woman, and child.  Five percent of the population accounts for 49 percent of total health care expenses.  The 15 most expensive health conditions account for 44 percent of total health care expenses.  Patients with multiple chronic conditions cost up to seven times as much as patients with only one chronic condition.

24 The greatest threat to hospitals… …will be our unwillingness to respond to the shifting demands of the market.

25 The end game  Before: Hospitals are associated with the “healthcare system,” a complicated maze of insurance and cost, which consumers find confusing and frustrating. Most consumers do their best to stay out of the healthcare system, find information on their own, and only seek care when absolutely necessary.  After: Consumers seek hospital involvement in sickness and in health. They find dealing with hospitals credible, easy, affordable, relevant and friendly. They recognize the hospital as an important part of the community and prefer purchasing anything to do with healthcare from a hospital or associated facility.
