3 Hong Kong Internet Background Population 6.8 million At Dec/2001, Internet users 2.6M (39% of population) Dialup vs Broadband : (3.2 to 1) WAN technology – ATM OC3, FE, GE International fiber capacity 164G capacity : 16 times increase in 2001 40G activated (70% Japan, 10% China, 10% US)

4 HARNET Background - History Hong Kong Academic Research Network 8 local universities and most tertiary institutions Found in 1985 (BITNET) First Internet connection in 1992 Internet2 connection in 2002 (planned)

5 HARNET – current network Star Topology Each institution connected by 2 OC3 circuits using public ATM services GE planned for interconnecting some members QOS and multicast tested on HARNET

7 HARNET – current network Commodity Internet 72M connection to ISP for international traffic 80M connection to HK Internet Exchange Other International connection 2M direct IPLC to CERNET 155M circuit to TANET

8 Internet2 Plan – Resources Government wants, but provides minimal funding Solution: Find sponsors Level3 donates DS3 x 3 international circuits PCCW donates domestic circuits Cisco donates network devices Trans Pacific IPLC – most expensive

10 Internet2 connection plan - BUT Level3 ran into financial trouble All Asian Assets sold to Reach (Consortium of PCCW and Telstra) Request Reach to continue the donation

11 Internet2 – Research We are newcomers Interested in IPv6, Multicast GRID computing, Telemedicine, Distance Learning
