Final Review

Reminder to come to the Geography social next door at 4 p.m. today. Two other common grammatical/ spelling errors: 1) confusing “loose” with “lose”, and 2) confusing “to” with “too.” Reminder that the final is on Wednesday the 17 th from 1 to 4 in Building 180, Room 134 and will contain all three of my classes. Today we will go over some of the elements that might be on the exam, which will consist of some T/F and multiple choice, but with the weight on short answer and essay questions. Housekeeping Items

On Tuesday we went over the nine themes discussed in Chapter 1 of the text. We also mentioned some related themes of our own: --the interconnection of issues and the need for a concerted global awareness and effort; -- the role of globalization and modernity; --the role of women, especially in development and population control; --the practical responses being undertaken to issues related to food, water, and space (for instance, urban housing and overcrowding), and -- environmental and climate change issues. You should be able to address all of these themes knowledgeably, and with specific examples. Review for the Final

I can’t go over the T/F and multiple choice questions as that would give them away; you just have to take your chances. For the short answers and essay questions, you will have choices – i.e. you won’t have to do all of them. You should be familiar with environmental issues in the regions we have discussed, from Africa on, as well as key current social issues. You should be able to talk about the impacts of colonialism and about what some have called ‘neo- colonialism.’ Review for the Final

You should be able to talk about gender roles and population issues in the different regions. Also: a little bit about the distinctive geographical characteristics of the different areas. Also be able to address the changing economic landscape of these regions, and the role of women within that. Be able to talk about how new cultural fusions have arisen as a result of globalization and colonialism. You should be able to take controversial issues – female circumcision, China’s one-child policy, the role of the Green Revolution and offer a well-considered opinion on them. Review for the Final
