What you will do today... -Discuss how the human body is organized into several levels -Recognize that the tissue level is the second level, going from smallest to largest -Name the four types of tissue in the human body. -Describe the specific functions of each tissue type.

Are you an organ/tissue donor?

Immortal Cells

Human Organization

Overall Scheme Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organisms

Types of Tissues 1. Epithelial: covers body surfaces and lines body cavities

Epithelial Tissue a. External for protection b. Internal are specialized for absorption (taking in) or secretion (letting out) c. Three types of epithelial cells -Squamous: flattened cells, protection and diffusion -Cuboidal: cube-shaped, secretion -Columnar: pillars, absorption

Squamous Cells

Cuboidal Cells

Columnar Cells

Epithelial Tissue d. Epithelium can be simple (one layer) or stratified (more than one layer)

Types of Tissues 2. Connective: binds organs together, provides support and protection, insulates, stores fat, produces blood cells; most widely spread tissue type with most diverse functions

Connective Tissue a. Connective tissue cells are found throughout a non-living matrix of elastin and collagen, which are proteins b. There are five types...

Five Types of Connective Tissue -Loose connective tissue are made of cells called fibroblasts; this tissue is adipose (fat)

Five Types of Connective Tissue -Fibrous connective tissue makes up tendons and ligaments

Five Types of Connective Tissue -Cartilage i. Hyaline ii. Elastic iii. Fibrocartilage

Five Types of Connective Tissue -Bone i. Compact ii. Spongy

Five Types of Connective Tissue -Blood i. Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) ii. Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)

Types of Tissue 3. Muscle: Composed of cells called muscle fibers

Types of Muscle Tissue a. Skeletal muscle is striated and voluntary

Types of Muscle Tissue b. Smooth muscle is involuntary

Types of Muscle Tissue c. Cardiac muscle is striated but involuntary

Types of Tissue D.Nervous: made of conducting cells called neurons 1. Brain 2. Spinal Cord

What is an organ? Organ: structure that is composed of two or more types of tissues that work together to perform functions

What is homeostasis? Homeostasis: internal environment remains relatively constant; performed by negative feedback
