Clarification ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Could you explain further?’ Challenge assumptions ‘Is this always the case?’ Ask for evidence ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Can you give me an example?’ Alternative viewpoints ‘Can/did anyone see this another way?’ Implications and consequences ‘But if...happened, what would result?’, ‘How does...affect...?’ Question the question ‘Why do you think that I asked that question?’, ‘Why was that question important?’

5. Two kinds of questions Professional Development 5 Display questions. These are elicit learners’ prior knowledge and check comprehension. They focus on form or meaning, and the teacher already knows the answer. –What does..... mean? –When do we use.....? –What comes after.....? –What’s the opposite of.....? –Where’s the stress in.....? Referential questions. These require information, opinion, explaination or clarification. They focus content rather than language, require ‘follow-up’ or ‘probe’ questions, and the answer is not always known by the teacher. –What do you think about.....? –Have you ever....when/where.....? –If you had.....wha t.....? –What kind of.....? –How do you.....?

Use as many questions as possible to check various aspetcs the language & to cover as many learners as possible.
