Why Different Foods in Different Regions? Level of Development- people in developed countries tend to consumer more food and from different sources than people do in developing countries Physical Conditions- Climate influences what is grown and then what is consumed –Developed countries food is shipped long distances Cultural Preferences- some food preference and avoidances are expressed without regard to the above factors

Total Consumption of Food Dietary Energy Consumption- the amount of food that an individual consumes –Kilocalorie and calorie Humans derive most of their kilocalories through consumption of cereal grain- grass that yields grain for food –Maize (corn,) wheat, and rice (40%)

Source of Nutrients Protein is needed for growth and maintenance of the human body—where a country gets the majority of its protein tells a lot about the people there –The primary difference between LDC and MDC is the source of protein in their diets

Nutrition and Hunger Food security –Defined by the United Nations as physical, social and economic access at all times to safe and nutritious food sufficient to meet dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. 1/8 of world’s inhabitants do not have food security

Dietary Energy Needs Average consumption per day –2,000 People in developed countries are consuming on average nearly twice the recommended minimum Calorie consumption in U.S. is the highest in the World United States

Undernourishment –Is dietary energy consumption that is continuously below the minimum requirement for maintaining a healthy life and carrying out light physical activity. Largest numbers of undernourished people are in India and China Sub – Saharan Africa is struggling to keep food production ahead of population growth
