Warm up In the following reaction, 5g of methane is reacted with 5 g of oxygen. If it makes 8 g of water, how much CO 2 gas is produced? CH 4 + 2 O 2 -> 2 H 2 O + CO 2 5g 5 g 8 g ?

Writing Chemical Reaction Day 1

Chemical Equations A chemical equation is a way to describe a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and other symbols. Example: CH 4 (g) + 2 O 2 (g) -> 2 H 2 O (l) + CO 2 (g)

What do the symbols mean? SymbolMeaning ->Produces or yields +Plus (s)solid (l)Liquid (g)Gas (aq)Aqueous Heat -> The reactants are heated Light -> The reactants are exposed to light Elec. -> An electric current is applied to the reactants

Aqueous? Aqueous mean that a substance is dissolved in water. (i.e. salt in water, sugar in water, anything dissolved in water)

Coefficients (the numbers in front) CH 4 (g) + 2 O 2 (g) -> 2 H 2 O (l) + CO 2 (g) The numbers in front of O2 and H2O are called coefficients. They tell you how many of a certain compound or element are needed or made. - What does it mean if there is no coefficient out front?

Practice HgO (s) -> Hg (l) + O 2 (g) 1.What are the products? 2.What are the reactants? 3.How many of each substance is needed? 4.What state is each substance in?

2Mg (s) + O 2 (g) -> 2MgO (s) 1.What are the products? 2.What are the reactants? 3.How many of each substance is needed? 4.What state is each substance in?

BaSO 4 (s) + 4C (s) -> BaS (s) + 4CO (g) 1.What are the products? 2.What are the reactants? 3.How many of each substance is needed? 4.What state is each substance in?

2Li (s) + 2H 2 O -> 2LiOH (aq) + H 2 (g) 1.What are the products? 2.What are the reactants? 3.How many of each substance is needed? 4.What state is each substance in?
