As a teacher it is my responsibility and privilege to foster the innate curiosity and desire to learn that all children have. I understand that all students can achieve success when given sufficient time and support, and it is my desire to encourage my students to become independent, resourceful and resilient thinkers. To do so, I commit to provide a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment where students are engaged through the use of authentic learning projects and given the opportunity to develop their personal, social, academic and life skills. I desire to continually develop my own knowledge and skills base, acknowledging that I too am a life-long learner. The people who have shaped my attitudes and beliefs towards teaching and learning include a whole variety of educational professionals including A.S. Neill, Peter Sanders, Julie Beer, Alison Ford, Jessica Brown, Glen Pearsall, Jo Lange, and Ken Robinson. I aim to continue learning as I listen to and observe the teaching and educational philosophies of others.

Take on board feedback and advice from mentor teachers. Use the Tribes Agreements to encourage attentive listening, mutual respect and personal best work Ensure that students know I am watching what they are doing, even when I am talking to an individual or small group. Don’t feel rushed – better to teach one concept well than three concepts without clarity. Be flexible with time and content – take note of how students are responding to my teaching. Use a positive tone and make no fuss when moving students who are distracted. Make a real effort to get to know each student, use the first day to learn their names. Use games to engage students in learning. Take anecdotal notes to assess students learning. Engage students by getting them involved (use students instead of counters when teaching maths). Be consistent and positive with managing disruptive behaviour, and address it immediately Roam through the class when everyone is working to check student understanding, encourage and assist where required.
