1 Project Name: Spirit Spike Process Owner: Charline Nguyen and Brayan Montes CI Facilitator: Department: John F. Kennedy High School Last Updated: March 17, 2014 Problem Statement: Over the past 3 years, student engagement has been slowly decreasing by 5% rather than being steady or increasing. The students and staff of John F. Kennedy are all involved. Students show lack of interest in school spirit and staff does not help advertise or participate in activities involved in the school. If the project is not complete by the end of the 13-14 school year it could decrease substantially for the next school years and decrease in school attendance. Goal Statement: Increase of student engagement by 10% for the school year. -Spirit Squad (involving students outside of Student Council) -These students will help others pep up for spirit days and games. -S.E.A.L. Team -Student Extracurricular & Athletic Leadership Team -Group of all captains and presidents from clubs and sports to try to inspire their team to be a better teammate and do as much as possible to better the school. Increase of student attendance by 3% for the school year. -Being involved in many school activities would help bring up student attendance due to most activities involving high G.P.A. requirements. Take data from all spirit weeks and attendance to sporting events. -Compare the data to previous years. Current State: The implementation of the commander S.E.A.L. team has been a great success and has attributed many objectives to our goal. We are halfway through our school year and we have seen a huge improvement in the number of attendance at school dances, sporting events and spirit days. During our Middle hall dance all freshman and sophomores were allowed in with one dollar if they attended all their TCAP sessions. At this point in time we feel very confident that we have met our goals and what we set out to do. Analysis: We did many things over the course of our school year to help the spirit problem and the school culture itself. One of the things that we did very well was the initiation of events for the first year and the planning of future events and how to keep them going. Advertising is something that we really need to work on for the future and something that really effected us. More meetings with the S.E.A.L. team would have helped so much, because they are the influential people in the school. Future State: Many of the things that we hope to keep going in the future are necessary for the school culture and the advancement of school spirit. Some of the things we hope to keep are: S.E.A.L. team Encouragement of attendance with incentives Incentivizing 92% attendance each week. Continuing giving out prizes for attendance at activities Implementation Plan: We worked our athletic director to for the S.E.A.L. Team and the activities director to move around certain spirit activities to help increase participation. We use Student Council to promote the school activities we have going on. Summary: We now have a dedicated S.E.A.L. Team to help engage underclassmen to participate in school sports and clubs. We changed our winter spirit week to a battle of the sexes week this was the most successful spirit week this year. We continue to partner with administration for other ways of engaging students.
