Photosynthesis Ms. Klinkhachorn January 6, 2010

Catalyst – Jan 6, 2010 1.What is the equation for photosynthesis? 2.What is the ultimate source of energy? 3.What is the formula for glucose? What is glucose? 4.Where does photosynthesis take place in a plant cell?

Catalyst – Jan 5, 2010 1.What do the roots “auto”, “hetero”, “photo”, and “troph” mean? 2.What is the difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph? 3.How can we identify a chloroplast when looking at a cell? 4.What is photosynthesis?

Where do the starting materials come from? Water is absorbed in the roots of the plants and carried to the leaves (where the chloroplasts are mainly found) by veins

Where do the starting materials come from? Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through pores on the surface called stomata These stomata are surrounded by half-moon shaped cells called guard cells, which control the size of the pore.

Stomata

Where do the products go? Oxygen is released into the air through the stomata – Living organisms need oxygen in order to breathe – Plants provide us with that oxygen as a by-product made in photosynthesis

Where do the products go? Glucose is taken back through the veins and delivered to different cells all throughout the plant. – Glucose is a building block for growth Glucose is sugar, sugars make up carbohydrates.. Big component of the cell wall – Glucose is used to make ATP in cellular respiration ATP is used to perform all the cell’s functions such as maintaining homeostasis and making proteins.

A Photosynthesis Rap… Chorus Photosynthesis, let’s get into this Discussion of sunlight, and transfer of energy. Photosynthesis, let’s get into this Process of chemical reactions and synergy. Verse I Plants take water, sun, and CO2, to make glucose: the sugar that they use for food They also put oxygen into the air So we can share, because oxygen is everywhere The energy transforms from solar to chemical All the time, everywhere, the process is identical In every plant, and every tree Enabling all living things to be
