Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Intrapersonal, Visual-Spatial, Verbal-Linguistic, Mathematical-Logical Lesson Abstract: Students will become authors and illustrators of a time book containing information about themselves and their activities at four different times of the day. Materials Needed: one piece of copy paper per student (for planning), one sheet of 9” x 24” paper for time book (standard paper size of 18”x24” cut in half), pencils, crayons, colored pencils, or markers Procedure: Students create a plan for their book. A piece of copy paper should be folded so there are four equal quarters. Each quarter is for a different time of the day and the activities the student participates in during that time. Example: “What time do I wake up? What do I do when I wake up?”, “What time do I get to school? What do I do when I get to school?”, “What time do I arrive home from school?”, “What time do I eat dinner?”, “At what time do I go to bed?” As students make plans for the book, they should include the time the activity takes place, details of what they do during this time, and a quick sketch. Once students complete their plans, they begin to create their book. The book should include a cover with a unique title, four clocks which accurately display the time of the activity, a written description of the activity, and an illustration. If time allows, students can use the back cover to write “about the author” (themselves). See images on the pages 2 and 3 of this lesson for visual explanation Standards Addressed in this Lesson: AKS tell time to the nearest five minutes and identify relationships of time such as the number of minutes in an hour and hours in a day (GPS, ITBS) (2MA_D2007-47) pose questions and collect, organize, and interpret data about self and surroundings (GPS) (2MA_F2007-56) discuss why people make art (QCC) (2VA_A2005- 14) practice safe and proper use of art materials and tools (QCC, CE) (2VA_A2005-19) Standards Addressed in this Lesson: AKS tell time to the nearest five minutes and identify relationships of time such as the number of minutes in an hour and hours in a day (GPS, ITBS) (2MA_D2007-47) pose questions and collect, organize, and interpret data about self and surroundings (GPS) (2MA_F2007-56) discuss why people make art (QCC) (2VA_A2005- 14) practice safe and proper use of art materials and tools (QCC, CE) (2VA_A2005-19) SUBJECT AREA/ SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL: It’s about Time!: Books about Time Language Arts & Visual Art- 1 st & 2 nd Grade SUBJECT AREA/ SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL: It’s about Time!: Books about Time Language Arts & Visual Art- 1 st & 2 nd Grade Page 1 of 4

While the paper is folded use the round lid of a plastic container to trace a circle. Cut around the circle carefully. When cutting is done correctly the book will look like those pictured below and on page 3 of this lesson. Times are written and displayed correctly. Some information is logically sequenced. More than one time is incorrect or information seems out of place. There is no clear plan for the organization of information. Time is not correctly displayed. Writing and grammar The book has no misspellings or grammatical errors. Great writing! The book has 1-2 misspellings, but no grammatical errors. Good Work! The book has more than 2 grammatical and/or spelling errors. IllustrationsArtwork is thought out, original, and creative! Artwork is complete. Could use some finishing touches. Artwork appears to still be in-progress.
