1 The PhysicsBowl A Contest for High Schools Michael C. Faleski Delta College Oct. 11, 2008

2 PhysicsBowl – 2008 Schools divided into 15 Regions –Roughly geographic –Michigan competes in Region 8 –Schools of science/math compete in own region Within each region – 2 divisions –Division 1 - 1 st year physics (first time students take physics) –Division 2 - 2 nd year physics (taken 2 nd, 3 rd, … course in physics)

3 Details of contest  40 questions Division 1 students - #1 - #40 Division 2 students - #11 - #50 Questions become progressively more difficult  45 minute time limit  Equation sheet provided  Multiple Choice - Machine scored  Questions cover all areas of physics Good review for AP/IB/ other exams

4 Winners Top two highest scoring students (only correct answers count) win prizes in each region & division Schools… Top 4 students (changing to top 5 in 2009) constitute team score Top 2 teams in each region/division win prizes

5 Winners – Michigan Students Division 1 1 st place – Eric D. Reum – Ludington, HS Division 2 1 st place – Duncan W. Harris – Chelsea School 2 nd place – Jimmy J. Li – Northville HS

6 Winners – Michigan Schools Division 1  2 nd place – Ludington HS Division 2  1 st place – Chelsea School

7 Prizes - 2008 Top 2 students (and their teacher) in each region/division  Won a TI-30 XS MultiView Calculator Top 2 schools in each region/division  Won $25 AAPT Store gift certificate  Won $100 gift certificate from Frey Scientific  T-shirts for students on team Looking to expand for 2009!

8 2008 PhysicsBowl ~175 schools competed ~4000 students  From US, Canada, and schools in Japan & Taiwan

9 Statistics  Highest Score – 37 in Division I 36 in Division II  Highest Team Score (4 students)– 131 in Division I 109 in Division II
