Digital Camcorder and Video Computer Multimedia

Two most important factors that make up a video Frames per second ( fps ) The resolution ( # of pixels ) of each frame in the video

Video Formats Mpeg or mpg –MPEG (pronounced M-peg), which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the name of family of standards used for coding audio- visual information (e.g., movies, video, music) in a digital compressed format. –The major advantage of MPEG compared to other video and audio coding formats is that MPEG files are much smaller for the same quality. This is because MPEG uses very sophisticated compression techniques. –http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/MPEG.html http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/MPEG.html

Video Formats (cont.) WMV –Windows Media Video AVI –AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave –AVI is the most common format for audio/video data on the PC MOV –Commonly used by Macintosh –Uses Quicktime to play video RM –Real Media –Requires Real Player Motion-JPEG –JPEG stands for the Joint Photographic Experts Group standard, a standard for storing and compressing digital images. Motion-JPEG extends this standard by supporting videos. In motion-JPEG, each frame in the video is stored with the JPEG format. 5 More about Video Formats Some applications can convert one video format to another. http://www.artech365.com/ Windows Movie Maker can support avi, mpeg, wmv files

Storage Amounts A half hour of video footage might consume 10 gigabytes of space.

Digital Camcorder A digital camcorder takes digital video and digital still images We have two camcorders - Canon ZR70 and ZR30 Digital Video Camcorder App. Cost: $400

Storage To store video the Canon uses a mini-DV (Digital Video) cassette –It can store 80 min of normal video To store digital images the Canon uses a 8mb Multimedia Card The Sony HandyCam camcorders we will use have an internal hard disk for storage.

Digital Video The Sony Camcorder uses a motion jpeg video format Video taken with the digital camera is mpeg video format 15 frames per second (fps) 320 x 240 pixels ( 10 seconds ) 160 x 120 pixels ( 30 seconds )

Digital Images It stores images using the jpeg format The default is 1,024 x 768 pixels –640 x 480 is also available There are three still image qualities –Superfine ( 440 kb, 14 per 8mb card ) –Fine ( 300 kb, 20 per 8mb card ) –Normal ( 160 kb, 39 per 8mb card )

Other Features A external microphone can be used with the camcorder Uses a lithium ion battery –Typical recording time 55 min using viewfinder 40 min using LCD 22X Optical Zoom 440X Digital Zoom

Capturing Video To capture video you need the following. –Capture Software – Windows Movie Maker ( Comes with XP ) –Digital Camcorder –Video Capture Card –Firewire cable However, while USB is limited to 12 megabits per second, IEEE-1394 currently handles 50-400 megabits per second.
