3 Perfect I am someone tried and true, I’m sure you’d like to know me.
They tell me I’m a gifted child, Grown-ups want to own me. I’m honest as the day is long, Just as sweet as pie. Good as gold, right as rain, The apple of your eye. I’m just as quick as lightning, Busy as a bee I am, Pretty as a picture, And as happy as a clam. I’m quiet as a door mouse, Sharp as any tack, Bright as a new penny, Wise as an owl in fact. And then the other side of me, As stubborn as a mule, As mean as any junkyard dog, Breaking every rule. Angry as an old, wet hen, Sly as any fox, Crazy as a bedbug, A face for stopping clocks! As slippery as an eel, Sneaky as a snake, Mad as any hornet, Nutty as a fruitcake, Now you know both sides, The sour and the sweet, Which one of the two of me, Would you like to meet? from Don’t Burn Down the Birthday Cake By: Joe Wayman

4 So your child is “Gifted,” what does that mean?
“Gifted and talented children are those identified by professionally qualified persons who by virtue of outstanding abilities are capable of high performance. These are children who require differentiated educational programs and/or services beyond those normally provided by the regular school program in order to realize their contribution to self and society.” (Marland, 1972.)

5 MISCONCEPTIONS… Students who are gifted can make it on their own. They can succeed without help. Students who are gifted are not aware of being different unless someone tells them they are. Students who are gifted should get all “A’s” on their report card. Only students who are gifted benefit from special programs.

6 Utilize Abstract Reasoning

9 How to prevent problems…
Establish open lines of communication with your child and their teacher early on. Educate and involve Health-Care and other professionals. Use educational flexibility. Establish parent discussion groups. Parents must understand characteristics that make gifted children seem different or difficult.

10 10 Rules of Creativity Don’t go with the flow – create your own current! Don’t let the sky stop you! Dare to be different! Don’t say it can’t be done! Others have good ideas too! Let your imagination soar! Dare to be wacky, weird, and outrageous! Anything that can be done, can be done better! Explore the unknown! ASK WHY NOT???
