© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies IMAP's ability to access messages (both new and saved) from more than one computer has become extremely important as reliance on electronic messaging and use of multiple computers increase, but this functionality cannot be taken for granted: the widely used Post Office Protocol (POP) works best when one has only a single computer, since it was designed to support "offline" message access, wherein messages are downloaded and then deleted from the mail server. This mode of access is not compatible with access from multiple computers since it tends to sprinkle messages across all of the computers used for mail access. Thus, unless all of those machines share a common file system, the offline mode of access that POP was designed to support effectively ties the user to one computer for message storage and manipulation. IMAP vs. POP3

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Note: The site to which we connect does NOT have to be the site from which we get our e-mail! For example, I use Time-Warner Road Runner and check my e-mail at Buffalo State or I could use my LAN connection at Buffalo State and check my e-mail at profsvet.com. It all depends on how you configure your e-mail!

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Discussion Groups () (interest groups, listservs, mailing lists)

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Open Moderated – messages are reviewed before posting Announcement – subscribers can only receive messages Digest – all messages included as text in one message Discussion groups can be classified into for basic types:

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies What software is needed to participant in a discussion group?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies e-mail (client) List server (server) Listserv Listproc Mailbase Mailserv Majordomo Software

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies List Server e-mail

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies How do I communicate with a discussion group?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Usually there are two e-mail addresses associated with a discussion group: the server with which you conduct business - subscribe/unsubscribe, list subscribers, etc. the list to which you send and receive group messages Note: you can also send an individual message to a group member.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies How do I find appropriate discussion groups?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies www.lsoft.com/lists/listref.html tile.net Web-based Search Engines

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Now let's see if we can find and subscribe to a discussion group.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies GROUPS (Usenet, Netnews, News)

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies What is a Newsgroup? Like mailing lists, Newsgroups are another way to share information among Internet users via e-mail.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Newsgroups cover a wide variety of subjects which are divided into hierarchies k12.ed.soc-studies.ww1 generalspecific

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies alt=>alternative comp=>computers k12=>education soc=>social news=>network news rec=>recreation sci=>science talk=>idle conversation TOP EIGHT PREFIXES

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies In a discussion group, messages sent to the group will be sent to all members of that group. However, messages posted to a newsgroup will be sent to a news server where you can access them at will.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies What is a news server?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies A place where newsgroups AND their messages are kept. There are over 100,000 newsgroups world wide. Therefore, instead of being on one giant computer, the Newsgroups are distributed to many news servers.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Be Aware, Some organizations do NOT support Newsgroups! Buffalo State Our Class Well, actually Buffalo State does. However it only supports a few limited ones, AND you must be using a campus computer.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies How do I communicate with a news server?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies As we have seen with other Internet components, there are protocols (http, smtp, pop3, etc.) that are required in order to communicate between the server and the client. For newsgroups, the NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) is used.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Now let’s see how to add a newsgroup and read messages

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Forums/Bulletin Boards

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Like Newsgroups, forums and bulletin boards are “active” ways to share information among Internet users, but these newer methods use your browser.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies How do I find forums and bulletin boards?

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies The following are a couple of forum directories: www.forumvirus.com www.forumfox.com You can also use an Internet search engine such as Google to find a forum/bulletin board. For example: “jeep forum” or “jeep bulletin board”

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. We have already examined e-mail, so now consider the following Internet communications continuum. e-mail chat rooms text (typed) audio (spoken) video (seen) instant messaging computer- computer computer- phone video conference phone-computer-phone (VoIP – Voice over IP) EDC 601 Instructional Technologies

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies We will examine some of these topics (audio, and video) again when we discuss adding multimedia elements to Web pages. For now our discussion will center on these in terms of personal communication.

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies You can join a chat room www.mirc.com/irc.html

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies You can send/receive messages. www.icq.com

© Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies You can have a conversation www.dialpad.com http://www.vonage.com
