2 Principle 1 The library media program provides a balanced, carefully selected, and systematically organized collection of print and electronic library resources that are sufficient to meet students’ needs in all subject areas and that are continuously monitored for currency and relevancy.

3 Collection Size and Currency Minimum – 12 - 20 items/student Exemplary – 16 – 24 items/student

4 Age of Collection Acceptable – average age of 15 years Exemplary – average age 11 years or less

5 Technology Acceptable – 5-9 students/computer Exemplary – 4 students/computer or fewer Replacement cycle range – every 3-5 years

6 Consortia Information Sharing Acceptable – electronic subscriptions, ILL, remote access to web in library Exemplary - includes school wide remote access to web and a minimum of 3-6 additional electronic databases

7 Print Periodicals Acceptable – 10-35 periodical subscriptions Exemplary – 20-65 periodical subscriptions

8 News Sources Acceptable – 1 local and 1 major metropolitan newspaper Exemplary – 2 additional major metropolitan newspapers

9 Selection Policy Acceptable – written, board-approved policy Exemplary – participates in development of same policy and shares it with community

10 Use of Selection Tools Acceptable – 2 professional and up-to-date tools Exemplary – 5 or more of these tools

11 Correlation to TAKS/TEKS Acceptable – collection based on curriculum, state objectives, and student characteristics Exemplary – also considers national information literacy standards and community input

12 Collection Management Acceptable – weeding with tools (CREW) Exemplary – management plan includes point of use development

13 Benefits Collection is appropriate and reliable correlates with classroom objectives includes a variety of resources resources used on and off campus

14 Principle 2 The librarian models and promotes the highest standards of conduct, ethics, and integrity in the use of the Web and other print and electronic resources.

18 Communication Acceptable – policies and procedures are communicated to staff and administrators Exemplary – same policies and procedures are well-publicized and advocated

19 Training Acceptable – provided upon request Exemplary – training integrated into library services plan

20 Benefits Copyright law is observed Campus and district internet policies are observed Documentation of sources is appropriate

21 Principle 3 The librarian employs existing and emerging technologies to access, evaluate, and disseminate information for integration into instructional programs
