The Hook This is the very first sentence in your essay Its purpose is to pique the readers attention to continue reading Andrew Jackson’s handling of domestic affairs during his administration saved the United States from a civil war. Americans are responsible for one in four Cherokees dying while moving to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears. Andrew Jackson appears to many to be an American hero but his actions suggest he is tyrant.

Background Information This is a brief description of the subject of the essay The information that you were prompted to define

Thesis Statement This is your claim What will you be discussing in the essay? How will you support your claim? Road map

Body Paragraphs! Your paragraph should have at a minimum six sentences. It is like a juicy hamburger. The more you add to your paragraph the better it is going to taste. Having the right sequence helps the reader understand the points your are trying to make.

Your Hamburger (Body Paragraph) Topic Sentence – Should describe or introduce the topic of the body paragraph Fact – Your fact should be a statement you can defend Example – The example you choose should justify why you chose your fact. It should tell the reader why your fact is true. Tie Back – This should tie together the information explained in your paragraph.

Conclusion! Your Conclusion should contain the “so what” of your paper. You argued three points (body paragraphs), why are your arguments important? What do you want your final impression to be?

More for a Conclusion Avoid summarizing what you have argued. – This is redundant Show the reader why your essay matters. Dig for a deeper meaning. Ask yourself “so what,” about your paper. Briefly mention your main arguments in your conclusion and use it as a launching point for a bigger point.

Citing Your Sources Sources need to be cited! – Check your Andrew Jackson sources The packet is page 62 Sourcing gives credit to the original author. – Gives you more credibility

One reason to study the Byzantines is because they started Eastern Orthodox Christianity. It is Christian, like the Catholic Church in Rome, but priests can marry. We should learn about this church because 250,000,000 people in the world worship in it, including 5 million Americans (Source C). A second reason to study the Byzantines is Justinian Code. This was written in the 6 th century, and straightened out the mess old Roman laws. It not only helped the Byzantines but it influenced later writers Like John Locke and Thomas Jefferson (Source D). Third, the Byzantine scribes copied by hand many of the old Greek books written by men Plato, Aristotle, Euclid (Source E). These books had not been copied; they might have been destroyed forever by invaders. Our culture today would be much weaker. However, the primary reason we should study the Byzantines they were a buffer against lots of different people who were trying to invade them, like the Persians 626 and the Arabs in 678 (Source A) They had a wonderful defense system with three walls around most of Constantinople (Source B) If the Byzantines had not fought off all the attackers, the invaders could have kept right on going throughout Europe. The Byzantines may be gone, but they should not be forgotten. Our laws, our religion, our literature, even our lives exist partly because of the Byzantines. Were it not for the Byzantine Empire, you and I might be living different lives today. We must study them!

Using Quotes Serfs had healthy food and a guaranteed food supply. In Medieval times, the serfs had fresh, healthy food to eat. In the spring and summer, they ate food from their small gardens, where they grew vegetables such as cabbage, onions, peas, beans, and leeks. Their basic everyday meal included bread, soup, porridge, cider, and ale. Unfortunately for the homeless, food is not guaranteed. “Many homeless search through trash bins, find discarded food, or panhandle to feed themselves.” These food sources for the homeless do not guarantee a nutritious meal or a guaranteed meal every time they search for food. The facts clearly show that the serfs had better food then the homeless have today.

Unfortunately for the homeless, food is not guaranteed. “Many homeless search through trash bins, find discarded food, or panhandle to feed themselves,(Source B).” These food sources for the homeless do not guarantee a nutritious meal or a guaranteed meal every time they search for food. The facts clearly show that the serfs had better food then the homeless have today.
