4 www.amia.org Overview and i10x10 We must invest not only in technology, but also in the education, training, and healthcare professionals who have knowledge and skills beyond clinical training. Every hospital, clinic, and healthcare organization will need professionals versed in informatics to assist with implementation, use, and success of health IT systems. — Don E. 5 www.amia.org Overview and i10x10 o What does an AMIA 10x10 partner look like? - Demonstrated ability to deliver a high-quality educational experience - Deliver approximately the equivalent in workload and sophistication of a three credit, graduate level course

(con’t) - Offer the content primarily through distance learning technologies, with at least one face-to-face session with students during the course - Provide instruction that is aligned with AMIA's mission, vision and goals

7 www.amia.org Overview and i10x10 We require that proposals provide… o Can deliver a distance learning program - Number of past courses and students taught - Infrastructure to support on-line teaching o Goals, intended audience and prerequisite level of education o Course format and structure - e.g., weekly lectures with readings, individualized instruction, project-based learning, etc o Include a description of instructional materials

8 www.amia.org Overview and i10x10 Proposals provide (con’t) … o Syllabus that lists the specific course sessions by topic with measurable learning objectives for each session including desired competencies upon completion o A description of the face to face component o List of faculty involved in the delivery of the course, including specific role of each in the course and evidence that each faculty member has the requisite informatics expertise

13 www.amia.org Challenges to Sharing o Intellectual property o Translation from US-based education context - Language, cultural, socio-economic, learning environment o Country-specific health care delivery models - Fee for service v. insurance-based v. government sponsored health care o Gatekeeper for patient information differs by country o Regulatory, organizational, and financial differences impact course design and content

14 www.amia.org The Future of i10x10 and Beyond Collaborative Global Informatics Education o Informaticians from around the world have developed their own training capacity o US-based educators remain eager to grow informatics capacity domestically and beyond o Promise in the bi-lateral exchange of knowledge - Not just one-way learning! o Focus on acute points of need o Tread with caution but remain hopeful
