2 THE APOSTROPHE  In the singular (just one) the apostrophe comes before the ‘s’ : that lady’s hat (one lady)  In the plural (more than one) the apostrophe goes after the ‘s’ : those ladies’ hats (the hats of those ladies) Be careful, however, with plurals that do not end in ‘s’ men women children

3 HYPHENS  Hyphens are used when joining two or more words to make another word: Short-term poverty-stricken  Often hyphenated words drop the hyphens and become single words: multi-story multistory

4 CAPITAL LETTERS These are used:  To begin sentences: They said they were leaving  For the first word in the speech: They said, ‘We’re leaving now.’  For initials: BBC MTV UNESCO  For God and anything of His or to do with Him  For days of the week and months of the year
