UK Work Experience Programmes GENERAL INFORMATION EC UK is using Twin, a work placement agency based in Lewisham, south London. They offer paid and unpaid work placements for students Our contact at Twin is Joanne Sayer, the Work UK manager Once a work placement booking is received at EC central it is sent to Twin Details of the placement are sent to the student approximately 1-2 weeks before it is due to begin Twin does not visit every company that they use. They tend to work on referrals from other companies Twin run placement workshops on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30pm - 1:30pm – N.B. Laura B went to one of these and it was very useful, definitely a good idea for students to attend Non-EU citizens must take a four week course before their placement, a two week course afterwards and a nationally recognised exam such as IELTS in order for their visa to be valid

UK Work Experience Programmes PAID PLACEMENTS Placements can be 12 - 24 weeks in length Twin has very few contacts in London, Brighton and Cambridge. Most placements will take place in rural areas and can be anywhere in the UK Students work an average of 37 hours per week Salary is usually minimum wage and paid monthly Statutory holiday entitlement No extra pay given for working bank holidays Placements can range from working in McDonalds to a theme park to a guesthouse, etc Students pay their transport costs from the school to their placement. Twin will recommend the best route and give details of transport costs, times, etc Accommodation is provided and rent is usually deducted from the student's salary (usually GBP 20 - 70 per week for food and accommodation) Accommodation is very basic and usually on site Students can pay GBP 80 to receive a Cambridge work experience certificate at the end of their stay if they wish

UK Work Experience Programmes UNPAID PLACEMENTS (Internships) Placements can be 3 - 12 weeks in length (part-time and full-time both possible) Twin can arrange placements in London in a variety of industries (e.g. finance, law, HR, etc) Students should give three industry choices as the first choice cannot be guaranteed PAID WORK LONDON Minimum upper-intermediate level Minimum 6 months

Double Banking Why do we double bank ? To make more money…. To fill the school even more…. To give teachers more hours…. Why do we double bank ? To offer more students great quality tuition, activities and service To offer a more flexible, fair timetable To allow more students to take advantage of EC’s great locations and quality

A Day in the life of EC London 08:30 – open school – on Mondays many students come to reception to check the timetable (we tell them to check on Fridays) – some are not too happy if their classes are not in Stukeley Street 08:50 – teachers make their way from Stukeley street to other locations 09:00 – Classes start – some students take advantage of AFTERNOON CLASSES and use the EMPTY computer room 10:30 – First Break – smokers pile onto the street – others grab a coffee in the café 12:15 – Lunch Break – a huge queue appears in the café for the daily special. Café fills very quickly 12:30 – A few students come to reception for information (Jobs, accommodation, sight-seeing) 14:00 – Staff get a chance to grab a sandwich from the café 15:00 – Walk in students come to look around the school 16:00 – Agent visits and want show around including accommodation visits.; We book these but the agent decides to go chopping instead !!!
