2 APAN Multimedia Working Group Charter Objective: To support and encourage research and development of multimedia applications that support/need the usage of high bandwidth networks. Activity: The First Goal of the Multimedia Working Group is to formulate our target projects. These targets will be based on the expertise of the members and their research areas.

3 APAN Multimedia Working Group Charter Initial target areas are: Distributed Multimedia Architecture - Sureswaran Ramadass Virtual Surgery and MM content Dev - Suhaimi Napis Database of VR objects and Images - (will be confirmed later) Video Streaming VOD - Hiroshi Mizushima

7 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) Distributed Multimedia Support Currently Being Researched Intensively by Researchers worldwide. Distributed Network Entities is an architecture invented and successfully implemented by USM’s Network Research Group.

8 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) Distributed Network Entities Currently Defined and Implemented Entities Include: –The Server entity –The Client entity –The MLIC entity –The Compression entity

9 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) - MLIC Entity The MLIC (Multi LAN IP Converter) entity enables Multicast Messages to be sent over non- multicast enabled networks and routers. (99% of Routers and Networks are non-multicast enabled) MLICs transform a regular network into a multidirectional multicast enabled network No adjustments or changes need to be made to the network. (ie MLIC does its job transparently)

11 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) - Server Entity Communicates with all entities to synchronize and coordinate the system In the case of the MLIC, the server provides the routing table for the MLIC

12 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) - Client Entity Performs the following functions: Multimedia captures --> capture audio and video information Multimedia playback --> display of audio and video Data packetization (for transmission) & Data reconstruction (for receiving). Communication with the server to maintain the RSW Control Criteria.

14 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) - Compression Entity The function of the Compression Entity is to: To provide real-time compression and decompression Particularly useful when bandwidth is an issue, like over the Internet. Compression algorithms used are transparent: Currently, the following are supported: MJPEG, INDIO, MPEG, H.261, YUV411, VDO

15 The above are some test results with different compression algorithms.

16 APAN Multimedia Working Group Applications (Distributed Multimedia Architecture) Implementation The Multimedia Working Group plans to implement the Distributed Networks Entities Architecture on the APAN Network High quality Multipoint Desktop Video Conferencing which utilizes this architecture will be its first application.
