Terrific Tuesday!! Find Seat Sharpen Pencil Open notebook, write today’s date, and write today’s topic: “Rational Numbers” Once done, sit quietly and wait for instructions

Rational Numbers EQ: How do rational numbers apply to the world around us? CCES: 7.NS.2d, 7.EE.3, MP.1, MP. 2, MP.6 Objective: I will know how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions

Brainstorm Take 1 min to… Write down every thing you know about fractions and decimals. Exchange papers Place a check by everything you agree with and circle what you don’t agree with. Give paper back and discuss and come up with a final conclusion about each.

What is a rational number? Rational number - any number that can be written as a fraction. Fraction – a number written in the form of a/b, where a & b are integers. Why is this? Decimal – a fraction whose denominator is a power of ten and whose numerator is expressed by figures placed to the right of a decimal point the system of decimal numerical notation. Repeating Terminating

Activity: Write a fraction for each of the models below.

Rational Numbers in the Real World http://youtu.be/hc5pqoRWY1s

What fraction of the rectangle is green? What decimal part of the rectangle is green?.6

Decimals to Fractions

To write a decimal as a fraction, write the fraction as you would say the decimal 0.12345 tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten-thousandths Hundred- thousandths

Say the decimal….Write it as a fraction.5.65.22.2.225 Notice….when you change a decimal to a fraction the denominator is always 10, 100, 1000 (powers of ten!)

Write.6 as a fraction.6 = Can be simplified to:.6 =

What about fractions to decimals? You can write a fraction as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator…..the fraction symbol means division!

To make a decimal…do the division!.00 28 20 0.75

One more thing……… When you divide, REMEMBER, add zeros to finish your division. 2 THINGS CAN HAPPEN

The division problem ends A Terminating decimal The division problem goes on forever….Repeating decimal

Repeating Decimals A single digit might repeat…..3333…. Or a group of digits might repeat….275275275….

Show repeating decimals by placing a line over the digit or group of digits that repeats.33333…. Becomes.3 And.275275….becomes.275

Remember Will be 1.4 1.2 will be Simplified to: Whole numbers stay the same!

Practice Convert the following to a decimal: 5/7, 2/3, 1 ½, 4/5 Convert the following to a fraction:.125,.75, 1.60, 2.25

Adding and Subtracting Video time!
