1 A. Real life examples: 1. How many doughnuts are in 2 dozen? 2. How many quarters are in 4 dollars? 3. How many pairs of shoes do you have if you have 18 shoes?

2 B. What is a Conversion Factor?
An equal relationship between two different units. Can be written as a ratio (or fraction). Examples:

3 C. Steps for Performing Factor Label System (FLS) Problems
GIVEN – what is given in the problem? Unknown – what are you trying to find? What conversion factor is needed? Set-up – GIVEN/1 **diagonal units cancel out Multiply on top, Divide on bottom – Box/circle answer

4 **You may need more than 1 conversion factor!! **Diagonal Units CANCEL
GIVEN x UNKNOWN UNITS = Answer (With units) 1 GIVEN UNITS (Conversion Factor) **MULTIPLY ALL NUMBERS ON TOP, DIVIDE ALL NUMBERS ON THE BOTTOM

5 D. One Step FL Problems How many liters are in 876,921 milliliters of water? GIVEN - What is given in the problem? UNKNOWN - What are you looking for? What “conversion factor” relates the given units to the unknown units?

6 D. One Step FL Problems 2. Find the number of kilograms of sugar in a 15,180 grams bag of sugar? a) b) c)

7 D. One Step FL Problems 3. How many feet are in 0.25 miles? a) b) c)

8 D. One Step FL Problems 4. A person weighs 120 pounds. How much does this person weigh in kilograms? a) b) c) 2.20 lbs = 1 kg

9 Check for Understanding:
How many millimeters are in meters? Convert 55.39g to kilograms. How many kilometers are in 5.62 miles?

10 More One Step Problems?

11 E. Multi-Step FLS Problems
1. Convert 6,342mg to kg. a) b) c)

12 E. Multi-Step FLS Problems
2. How many inches in 1 meter? a) b) c) 1 in = 2.54 cm

13 E. Multi-Step FLS Problems
3. How many truckloads will it take to fill 2 warehouses? a) b) c) 1 warehouse = 3000 boxes 1 truck = 235 boxes

14 E. Multi-Step FLS Problems
4. How many seconds are in 6.5 years? a) b) c)

15 Exit Slip: What is the length in cm of a 3.55 km road? a) b)
c) 100 cm = 1 m 1000 m = 1 km

16

17 F. Numerator/Denominator Problems
1. A sink leaks water at a rate of 2.5 mL/second. How many liters per second is this? a) b) c)

18 F. Numerator/Denominator Problems
2. A car drives down the highway at a speed of 62 miles/hour. How many meters/second is this? a) b) c) m = 1 mile 60 s = 1 min 60 min = 1 hr

19 F. Numerator/Denominator Problems
3. An object has a density of lb/ft3. What is the density in g/cm3? a) b) c) 1 kg = 1000 g 1 kg = 2.2 lbs 1 in3 = cm3 1 ft3 = 1728 in3

20 F. Numerator/Denominator Problems
4. Find the number of miles/hour if a vehicle travels 0.89 m/s . a) b) c) 39.37in = 1m 12 in = 1 ft 5280 ft = 1 mi 60 s = 1 min 60 min = 1 hr

21 Exit Questions: You find a clear stone on your way home from school. You decide to find the density to see if you can determine the identity of the stone. You found the mass to be 6.20 g and the volume to be 1.75mL. Calculate the density of the stone. You looked up the density online but they are all listed in lbs/ft3. Convert your density to these units.
