10 What is the difference between Magnet and Vanguard (G/T)? Vanguard (G/T) program refers to any of the programs in the district designed to serve the needs of gifted and talented (G/T) children. So, when you see the word Vanguard, just think G/T. All schools have a Vanguard (G/T) program. If you are identified as GT and you transfer to another school in the district, you will still be identified as GT. Magnet programs offer a specialized focus of study designed to appeal to a wide variety of student interests and needs just like fine arts or science (and in Wheatley’s case, Technology Careers). The programs and themes vary by campus.

11 When do I apply for magnet? Applications Accepted November 3, 2012  Applications for all Magnet programs accepted beginning November 3, 2012 Application Deadline January 11, 2013  Applications for Magnet programs must be postmarked no later than January 11, 2013, for guaranteed consideration in the first round. Parent Notification Day March 22, 2013  Application status information mailed to parents on March 22, 2013 (postmarked) Parent Response Deadline April 5, 2013  Parents must notify Wheatley "intent to accept" by April 5, 2013 (postmarked)

12 Credit by Exam The Credit by Examination (CBE) is a testing program that offers students without prior instruction the opportunity to advance to the next grade level or test out of a high school course. Also, CBE helps students with prior instruction to be placed in their appropriate grade level. Parents interested in this program should direct their questions to their school counselor or principals. A representatives will contact student assessment to make arrangements for testing.

13 Purpose The CBE helps to determine if the student is adequately prepared for placement to a more advanced level of instruction and insures proper grade placement for students entering HISD from home schools, unaccredited private schools or foreign schools, and for whom no records are available. The CBE also allows students the opportunity to pass a failed course. There is a cost, however students can also earn credits online through Grad Lab at no cost to the student.
